Hand Stripping in Eversley

For wirehaired breeds. Dead coat removed by hand to keep colour and texture.

Who it suits

Hand stripping is for wirehaired breeds, such as border terriers, wire fox terriers, schnauzers, Westies and wirehaired dachshunds. Removing the dead hair by hand, rather than clipping, keeps the coat's natural colour and harsh, weatherproof texture.

What to expect on the day

Allow three to four hours. Hand stripping is slow, careful work, so Helen builds in breaks and lets your dog rest when they need to. Most dogs find it quite relaxing once they are used to it.

Questions

Does hand stripping hurt?

When the coat is ready, the dead hair comes away easily. Helen works at the dog's pace and stops if your dog is uncomfortable.

Can a clipped wire coat be hand stripped?

Often it can be brought back over several visits, though it takes patience. Helen will look at the coat and talk you through it.

Why does it take so long?

Every bit of dead coat is removed by hand. That time is what keeps the colour and texture right.
